The Dragon Reborn Read-Along, Week 2

Welcome to The Dragon Reborn Read-Along. This is week 3, hosted right here on Musings on Fantasia. If you want to join the read-along, see the schedule HERE.

1) Perrin saw Hopper in his dreams right after Moiraine warned him to be cautious of them. What do you think it means that he saw Hopper? Should he be as paranoid about his dreams as Moiraine leads him to be?

Perrin is unsure what all the wolf stuff, but I think he really needs to find out more about it all. The wolves have never done him wrong, and as long as he conscious about what might happen, I don't think there's much chance that it actually will happen. I totally love Hopper! I'd be right in there trying to talk to him again. As for Moiraine, it's important to remember that his wolf gifts are not of the One Power, which makes her naturally suspicious of them. That doesn't mean Perrin necessarily needs to be, though he should proceed with caution.

2) Some kind of large, deadly dog was hunting Rand. What do you make of it and Rand's plans to go to Tear?

Creep hounds! Just more evidence that the shadow is hunting him, I suppose. I think going to Tear is bold. He just goes expecting things to work out, which is more than I would probably be willing to do. Though I suppose sitting cooped up and doing nothing all winter would make you stir crazy.

3) What do you think of Nynaeve and Egwene being asked to hunt the Black Ajah and the all-access passes the Amyrlin gave them? Do you think the Amyrlin is wise to trust them and Verin?

I think it's awesome! I'd be so excited to get this assignment! Scrubbing pots? Not so fun. Sneaking around looking for evidence of the Black Ajah? Awesome! I think the Amyrlin is reluctant to trust them, but I believe at one point she made a comment about how she really couldn't fully trust anyone--even Moiraine--but she has to start somewhere. In other words, she's doing the best she can and hoping it doesn't come back to bite her in the butt!

4) Who do you think sent the Gray Man and who was he aiming to kill? (Who stabbed him, for that matter?) Nynaeve seems to suspect Sheriam of something. Do you concur?

He was obviously aiming for either Nynaeve or Egwene, which means someone dangerous either knows of their involvement in the search or the Black Ajah or perhaps their involvement with Rand. It's understandable that Nynaeve suspects Sheriam. Most investigators today will tell you that the perp often returns to the scene of the crime. Sheriam's presence was quite convenient. But, you know, perhaps a bit too convenient. She's kind of the obvious answer.

5) Elaida's visit to the Accepted's quarters was...interesting. What information do you think she was fishing for? Between the two, who would you more readily believe to be Black Ajah--Elaida or Sheriam?

Elaida

Elaida is such a diva! She's the kind of woman you hope one of our girls (Egwene, Elayne, or Nynaeve) gets to b**ch slap at some point. It would be a little obvious for her to be fishing for info on behalf of the Black Ajah. In this meeting she struck me as someone who's totally in the dark in all respects and is trying desperately to figure out what everyone else is in on while she's out in the cold. (I'm sure Morgase brushing her off has something to do with the attitude. Now she's pissed and looking for someone to blame for her fall from power.)

6) Once again we find Mat plotting to "get away" from all Aes Sedai. Do you think he'll succeed this time?

I think this is hysterical! Mat's the kind of guy that always tries SO hard to get away from his fate, and it always ends up pushing him right into its arms. I love his flippant personality. He goes from being concerned about Rand to wondering if he's gone crazy and killed everyone yet in the space of a heartbeat. He says he won't let anyone--especially Aes Sedai control him, but he's too curious to leave right away. Pattern? Mat always makes me smile and shake my head.

7) Selene came to visit Mat and when he wasn't as submissive as she wanted, she started doing something to him that gave him a headache. What do you think it was?

Okay, I've read this before and totally have a good idea of what that was, but when you consider that he didn't do what she wanted and she got annoyed, and then he started to feel weird, obviously she was trying to get him to do what she wanted in some way. Considering who we know she is, that's pretty creepy. The Amyrlin showed up, interrupting her, and Mat totally dodged a bullet. The question is, for how long?

Gawyn & Galad

Extras:

My favorite scene in this section: seeing Nynaeve unceremoniously kick Galad and Gawyn out of her room. So refreshing to see a woman who--even though she is somewhat affected by Galad's ridiculous beauty--can still keep her head enough to best him. It's so condescending that he thinks he can flash his smile and every woman for twenty miles will just melt. (He totally reminds me of Flynn Ryder in Disney's Tangled!) Also excited to learn that Gawyn may have the hots for Egwene. He may not be quite as pretty, but as a possible boyfriend, I infinitely prefer him!

How is everyone else liking it?

  1. Hehe! I hope Egwene and Gawyn get to smooch. He seems like a nice guy and she needs a man in her life that is not Rand.

It's great that you call Elaida a diva! haha! This is so true. She was one of the most influential aes sedai...until Queen Morgase brushed her off. tsk, tsk. No wonder her nose is bent out of shape.
