Double Cover Reveal!!!
For those who don't know, I'm putting out two books next month. I know that sounds insane, but I've been working on both for some time and they just both came to fruition at the same time. I want to get them both out quickly. Besides, one is a short novel, so it wasn't as much work as my novels generally are.
Anyway, I'm doing a double cover reveal today! Yea!
Dark Remnants, book 1 of my Street Games series will be available September 3, 2013. This first one is an introduction to the series, so it's a shorter novel for me, though still not quite short enough to be considered a novella. It's full length, just not very long. Does that make sense? :D
This book will be available for $0.99 for a limited time upon release. Get your fast before the price goes up! I'll post links here on the 3rd!

So excited to get these out! I've been working on Quantum Entanglement since the beginning of the year and, while it hasn't been that long for Dark Remnants, I've had this story in my head for probably two full years. So glad to see them both completed! *Squee*

Book Review: CassaStar by Alex J. Cavanaugh
I don't usually do book reviews on Mondays, but my blog is pretty full this week and I wanted to get this review in before the end of the month.
My blogger buddy, Alex J. Cavanaugh, science fiction writer and blogger extraordinaire, is releasing the third book of his sci-fi trilogy, CassaStorm in September. I'll be participating in a very unique book blitz, but that's not for a few more weeks. I haven't read CassaStorm. In fact I hadn't read any of the trilogy. Until last week. I decided it was high time I read something Alex has written (other than his blog posts, of course!). So, I read book 1 of his trilogy, Cassastar.
To pilot the fleet s finest ship Few options remain for Byron. A talented but stubborn young man with a troubled past and rebellious attitude, his cockpit skills are his only hope. Slated to train as a Cosbolt fighter pilot, Byron is determined to prove his worth and begin a new life as he sets off for the moon base of Guaard. Much to Byron s chagrin the toughest instructor in the fleet takes notice of the young pilot. Haunted by a past tragedy, Bassa eventually sees through Byron's tough exterior and insolence. 1. Do you think that it is possible that Nynaeve and Elayne will be more cautious in the future and avoid the next very obvious trap that arises? Also, any ideas where the extra pigeons were going after Mistress Macura’s recovery?
One can hope that they'll learn from their mistakes. We always discuss how very green both of them are, having both only been Accepted when they left the tower. I think these are their growing pains and they'll learn to be more cautious. As for the extra pigeons, Mistress Macura said she only served the Yellow Ajah, but I think it's clear that she has more than one master, and that others are watching her and reporting as well. I would guess some went to the Black Ajah, while others could have gone to any of the Forsaken.

Close of Mermaid Challenge + Follow Friday
So the Summer Mermaid Reading Challenge is officially over! Below is the last of the mermaid reviews for me! In 14 weeks I read 15 mermaid books. They are listed below along with their reviews. I had the impression that lots of mermaid books were very badly written, but either I just got lucky or that's not true. Don't get me wrong: there were a few that didn't impress me, but overall I really loved all the mermaid books I read. I got to read lots of great books and was introduced to tons of new, amazing authors! Among my favorites were Jackson Pearce's Fathomless, Jenn Reese's Above World and Anna Bank's Of Poseidon. Some I wasn't as impressed with were Elizabeth Fama's Monstrous Beauty and Brenda Pandos's Everblue.

Happy Monday, Everyone!
Just a few quick announcements today. As most of you know, I'm putting out several books during the latter half of the year. I have two books--one full length novel and one shorter novel--coming out in September. One is a crime drama novel entitled Dark Remnants. The other is book 2 in my dystopian sci-fi series, Interchron.
I'll be doing a double cover reveal the end of this month, so if anyone is interested in helping me spread the word with cover reveal, or would like to be involved in the book tours, email me at lkhillbooks@gmail.com. I'll be setting up tours and sending out review copies over the next couple of weeks.
In October, my first historical fiction novels, Citadels of Fire, will be released, courtesy of Jolly Fish Press. If you're interested in helping with that tour at all, let me know as well, though it won't be for another 4-6 weeks.

Book Review: The Passage by Justin Cronin

Fast forward two years. I finally got my hands on the copy of this book again, and...I got busy again. Of course, it doesn't help that this book has large pages, small type, and still weighs in at 776 pages! It's a bit of a tome. But, I'm happy to say that I finally finished it. (Yea!)
What can I say about this book?
It was very different--almost like two completely different books in one. When first reading it, I got less than a third of the way through it, and the first part feels like a horror story. It has a very Stephen King feel to it. I assumed the entire book would be that way. I was wrong.

The Fires of Heaven Read-Along, Week 1
Welcome to week 1 of The Fires of Heaven. We finished The Shadow Rising last week and are now onto book 5. The schedule is HERE if anyone wants to follow or read along. 1) Elaida doesn't seem to have as strong a hold on the White Tower as she would like. Do you think her tactics to demand obedience and courtesy will work with all? How would you go about defying Elaida if you were stuck in the White Tower with her?
I think her tactics will work on some. Many of the Aes Sedai in the room were shocked when she exerted her power, but they obeyed. Alviarin, on the other hand (does that name sound to anyone else like Elvira?) didn't seem phased. Intimidation is one of those things that is never sure. If it works, great, but it's not the same as true loyalty. If it doesn't work, then be afraid, be very afraid. If it were me, I wouldn't have stayed in the tower at all. I think I would have left with the others who fled because I wouldn't have wanted to be under Elaida's thumb.

2) A few of the Forsaken get together at the end of the Prologue for plotting and sniping at each other. Will any of their plans come to fruition? If you were Rand, who would you neutralize first?
I'm sure some of their plans will come to fruition, but probably not in exactly the way they believe. I don't know who I'd go after if I was Rand--Lanfear always seems pretty dangerous. For myself, I totally want Graendal to just stop breathing. She's a disgrace to the name of woman. (Not that I feel strongly about this or anything. :D)

Min's was probably the most natural, though Siuan's was the most compelling. I don't have much respect for women who bat their eyelashes at men to get what they want, so while it was kind of amusing coming from a former Aes Sedai and Keeper of the Chronicles, I wasn't a fan of Leanna's approach, and I was glad it didn't work the way she wanted. Gareth Bryne is a bit too grounded for it. Siuan's was cool because she was so intense and direct that it got his attention and made him certain she was telling the truth, even if she wasn't. I also think it's kind of funny that, now that the oath no longer apply to them, they had no problem telling the biggest lie possible.
4) Couladin still has not entered Rhuidean, even though it is now open to all. Rand plans to use the Aiel to quell the other other nations before he tackles the last battle. Do you think Couladin & the Shaido could jeopardize that plan?
Could? I'm sure they'll try. The fact that Couladin could enter Rhuidean and hasn't even tried shows that even he doesn't really believe he has a claim. He just wants to be right and have power. That doesn't bode well for Rand finding absolute loyalty among the Aiel.

I'm sure Asmodean is holding back, or trying to hold back, anything he thinks might be advantageous to hold back. If Rand forces him to reveal something, he's too much of a coward to refuse, but I doubt he'd just volunteer anything that would put him at a disadvantage. Just because he's cowardly, I wouldn't assume he's given up on getting away and/or defeating Rand. Pranks is a great question. I loved how Moiraine got ticked off and smacked him with the One Power. He assumed it was Egwene--that was something she'd do--but finding out it was Moiraine was hysterical! My sisters and I always joke that we want the angels to trip people when they're being arrogant, just to bring them down a notch. That'd be a cool use for the One Power. Or you can make toilet paper stick to his boot or something. You know, something classy. :D

I think that's kind of a dangerous question. LOL. In junior high, my friends and I were big on toilet-papering the houses of the boys we liked. Of course, we lived in the suburbs, which were pretty nice neighborhoods. Can't tell you how many picket fences I dove behind when squad cars drove by after curfew. Can honestly say I never got caught, though. :D
Extras:
Loved the ceremonial words the Aiel clan chiefs used when departing. Jordan always does a great job of showing different personalities, even if we only meet the characters briefly.
"Till shade is gone," he recited, "till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder's eye on the last day...to Shayol Ghul itself." (pg. 88)
Awesome! I love this!

It's always been one of my favorite volumes because it has so much great stuff in it, including Rand's personal history, the Tower of Genji, the first (major) appearance of Slayer, journey into the Waste, Nynaeve and Lan's first make-out scene, and so much more!

What does this say about our society?
On the one hand, I'd like to say that it means people have a certain amount of hope. They get excited about a big prize and there's nothing wrong with that. At least on the surface. (As someone who's much more likely to enter a giveaway for a $50+ giftcard than for a $10 one, I understand this concept first hand.)
There is one major difference between a giftcard giveaway and $400 million jackpot. And it both is and isn't the amount.

I thought this was great! Everyone is so terrified of the Forsaken, but they're still just people. Very powerful people, but still just people. It's true of all bad guys. They always have weaknesses--often in the arrogance realm--but all you have to do to beat them find their weakness and exploit it. This is why I love Nynaeve so much. She's so determined and just gets it done. I think all of our favorite channelers--Rand, Egwene, Elayne, Aviendha--are capable of doing this, and Moiraine has certainly taken on Forsaken before (see book 1). I think it's only a matter of time before we see more smack downs like this.

For this week's review, I read Fins are Forever by Tera Lynn Childs. I read the first book in this series, Forgive my Fins, a few weeks ago and loved it! So I couldn't wait to pick up the sequel.
Childs has a writing style that's just delightful. There's plenty of angst still going on in Lily Sanderson's life, but it's all so hysterical that you just can't stop turning the pages.
*Spoiler for book 1* She and Quince are together now, *end of spoiler, but that doesn't mean life's going to get any easier. Lily plans to renounce her claim to the throne of Thalassinia in order to live on land with Quince, but she hasn't actually told him that being with him means she'll lose her position in the merekingdom.
In addition, she never planned on a future on land, which means she hasn't paid much attention to grades. Now, if she wants to help her kingdom from above--her idea is to become a marine biologist--she needs a decent SAT score and to get into a good college. Stress!
To make things worse, her horrible, bratty cousin shows up needing help. Apparently Dossinia has done something that's made Lily's father, the sea King, banish her from the kingdom, and as her last duty as royal daughter, he wants Lily to help Doe grow a conscience and sense of responsibility. Not like that'll be hard or anything.
As disaster piles upon disaster, hilarity ensues and Lily thinks she might just go crazy. Or, you know, at least miss her college interview. I totally loved this book. According to goodreads, there's a third book. I was thinking it wasn't out yet, but it is. I don't know if my library has it, but I'm about to check! You all know I'm not huge on YA or high school drama, and that's exactly what these books are. But for me, they're the exception. Totally love them. Would recommend them to anyone who wants a light, fun, hysterical but also very romantic read. You can't go wrong with Tera Lynn Childs! :D

How do you handle a book you don't like? Do you DNF or do you power through?
It really depends with me. I have DNF'd before, but I have a bit of a finishing complex, so unless I'm really crunched for time or I really, really, REALLY hate it, I usually power through. Of course, there are always exceptions.
The really, really REALLY hatred is rare because I generally don't pick up a book unless I'm reasonable sure I'll enjoy it. For example, I might DNF a cheesy erotica, but I wouldn't pick one of those up in the first place, so the chances are low that I would hate a book enough to DNF it.

In addition, she never planned on a future on land, which means she hasn't paid much attention to grades. Now, if she wants to help her kingdom from above--her idea is to become a marine biologist--she needs a decent SAT score and to get into a good college. Stress!
To make things worse, her horrible, bratty cousin shows up needing help. Apparently Dossinia has done something that's made Lily's father, the sea King, banish her from the kingdom, and as her last duty as royal daughter, he wants Lily to help Doe grow a conscience and sense of responsibility. Not like that'll be hard or anything.
As disaster piles upon disaster, hilarity ensues and Lily thinks she might just go crazy. Or, you know, at least miss her college interview. I totally loved this book. According to goodreads, there's a third book. I was thinking it wasn't out yet, but it is. I don't know if my library has it, but I'm about to check! You all know I'm not huge on YA or high school drama, and that's exactly what these books are. But for me, they're the exception. Totally love them. Would recommend them to anyone who wants a light, fun, hysterical but also very romantic read. You can't go wrong with Tera Lynn Childs! :D

The really, really REALLY hatred is rare because I generally don't pick up a book unless I'm reasonable sure I'll enjoy it. For example, I might DNF a cheesy erotica, but I wouldn't pick one of those up in the first place, so the chances are low that I would hate a book enough to DNF it.
