Top Ten Tuesday--Topics I Won't Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week we will post a new Top Ten list  that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

Top Ten Words/Topics that will make me NOT pick up a book.

Not many of those, actually.

Source
1. Erotica--I don't mind some sexy times, but I generally prefer it to be of the PG-13 variety. Books that are erotica just to be erotica border on porn, and it's not at all my thing.
2. Genre Romance--I'm all about the romance in any given story, but in my experience, genre romances are shallow, not always well-written, and often border on erotica.
3. Gay/Lesbian Themes--Nope. Not at all. Just not my thing.
Political Books that are not of my Affiliation--I don't mind reading nonfiction political books, but if they aren't what I believe, why would I waste my time with them?
4. Books Glorifying People I DON'T Admire--I don't care how well-written a biography or historical fiction book is. If I don't admire or respect the person it's about, why would I want to read it?
5. Books Written by Criminals--I will never give money to people who do awful things, break the law, and then try to capitalize on it by buying and/or reading their books.
6. Books Espousing Dogmatic Agendas other than Christianity--What can I say? I'm a very traditional Christian, so naturally this is a bias I have. I don't read heavily in the Christian genre, but it doesn't stop me from picking up a book, either. I have no desire to pick up books that in any way promote Atheism, Scientology, or any other religion of which I'm not apart. Any book of this kind has an agenda--including Christian ones--and if you don't believe in it, it just sounds preachy.
7. Chick Lit--Just not for me. I've got to have more depth than what this genre typically offers.

That's all I can think of. Anything else I'm at least open to, depending on how it's handled.

How about you? What topics will you absolutely not read?

  1. Erotica made my list this week too. Its prevalence this past year or so has left me very O_o I don't mind sexy times in my novels either but the popularity of some books out there...I just don't understand.

  2. A couple of those I won't read either.
I'll admit I have read a chick lit book, because it was by a fellow blogger buddy and fan. Not my thing, but it was good.

  5. I don't like pure romance either. It's definitely interesting to read what type of books some people won't read.
