Movie Review: Captain Phillips
| Source |
This is the true story of a naval captain (played by Tom Hanks) who finds his ship full of cargo ambushed by Somali pirates with guns. He has to find a way to keep his crew safe and himself alive, while also dealing with these uneducated but brutal pirates.
Overall, I really loved this film. More than I thought I would. There's not a lot to say except that it's an amazing story. I won't go into the logistical details, because they'd be mundane in a review, but this man, Captain Phillips, is brave and selfless. He nearly gives his life for his crew and endures a traumatic, horrific ordeal. A true story of human greatness in the face of a terrible situation.
I gotta say, this might be the best acting I've ever seen Tom Hanks do. Better than Castaway. Better than Saving Private Ryan. I was just so impressed. He had me in tears at the end. I understand why he was up for so many awards. Plus, it was pretty much a one-man show. Of course there were the crew members and the bad guys, but they weren't even really supporting roles. Tom Hanks had to carry this move all by his lonesome. And trust me, he did it well.
I always love when, at the end of true stories, they do a quick afterward using on-screen captions to tell what happened to the characters afterward. The ones at the end of this movie just made me smile and think, "what a great film."
I'd highly recommend it to anyone who needs a deep, but ultimately uplifting story about the human spirit. Such a great movie!
Has anyone else seen Captain Phillips? What did you think of it?

1) We finally have Nynaeve and Lan reunited. What did you think of the circumstances of their fateful meeting? Will Lan ever be whole?
Loved this part! I totally felt for Nynaeve. Of course when you finally see the guy you've been pining for again, it will be when someone nearly kills you and you look like crap. But, it was still very romantic. I have to give Nynaeve kudos here for more or less taking news of Myrelle's sexual escapes with Lan in stride. Not that she was exactly cool about it, but at least she didn't freak out and skin him with the One Power or anything. For Nynaeve, that's actually an accomplishment. Now they're married. Yea!

Follow Friday: First Reads. Again.
Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers -- but you have to know -- the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.
The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!
How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools -- keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!
If you could read a book for the "first time" again, what would it be and why?

Way of Kings Read-Along, Week 6 + Giveaway!
Welcome to week 6 of our Way of Kings Read-Along! Before I get to the discussion questions, I need to mention our giveaway! Because our read-along is so big (10 blogs) and in honor of the imminent release of book 2, Words of Radiance, Tor has sponsored an epic giveaway: 10 copies each of The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. Keep in mind that per Tor's policy, no P.O. Boxes are allowed and the Words of Radiance copies won't be shipped until the book releases on March 4th.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
The Tor giveaway is only for the U.S. and Canada, but not wanting to leave our international readers, several of the bloggers have chipped in two copies of each book for international readers as well. As long as The Book Depository ships to you, you can enter, though we ask that US/Canada residents refrain from this giveaway since you have a lot of books in the previous one that you could win. Winners have 48 hours to respond otherwise we will be forced to pick a new winner. We can’t be responsible for books lost in the mail.

1. Both Kabsal and Jasnah have spoken to Shallan about stealing the Soulcaster, and both have done so in a pretty lighthearted manner, considering how serious it would actually be to steal it. Do you think Kabsal was telling the truth when he brushed off Shallan’s questions about his plan to steal the Soulcaster? Is he still interested in stealing it? Does he have other, deeper motives?

Tips for an Awesome KDP Promo!
This past month (January) I ran my first real KDP promotions, and they went great!
The first one I ran was on my book Quantum Entanglement, Book 2 of Interchron. I knew it would be kind of a weird promo, because it's book 2 of the series. Usually you do a book 1 promo. Now, I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing book 2, but my hands were tied here. Book 1 was self-published, which means I can't control the price. Book 2, on the other hand, is self-published. So, I just decided to do a promo on book 2 in the hopes that at least some people would go back and download book 1 and make me some money. (I won't actually know whether or not they did for another week or so, when I get my royalty report from my publisher, so I'll let you know. :D)
Anyway, long story short, I did the promo on Quantum Entanglement, and just didn't expect much. To my shock, 1,328 copies were downloaded over 2 free days. Yippee!
Now, before anyone lectures me, I know that not everyone delves into their free books right away, if at all, and that if anyone does download book 1, the percentage will likely be small.
Yeah, I don't care.

A Crown of Swords Read-Along, Week 6

| Moridin (Source) |
1. It would seem that we have the identity of the Watcher from last week, but Moridin is not the name of any of the Forsaken. Is he a new Forsaken, just as Shaidar Haran is a new type of Myrddraal, or is he a reincarnation of one of the dead ones? Were you surprised that Moghedien was allowed to live and do you think she will ever escape the mindtrap?
I know the answer to who Moridin is, so I won't say. We have seen some of the Forsaken be resurrected, though, so that's a viable option. Hint: We know Moridin has these weird dark spots, the sa'a over his eyes. What other...um...bad guy have we seen that had messed up eyes?
