Top Ten Tuesday: TV and Film
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!
Each week we will post a new Top Ten list that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.
Let's talk about other types of stories! Top 10 Movies/TV Shows (All covers courtesy of goodreads.com unless otherwise linked.)
Somehow I doubt this will be a shock, but my favorite things to watch mirror my favorite genres in reading and writing. Keep in mind I have entirely too many to just pick 10, so these are just a few of my favorites.

Why Literacy Equals Success

The story is about a very successful man, who talks about his childhood on the "wrong side of the tracks." This is quite literal for him because, in his neighborhood, a large train yard separated the poor houses from the wealthy ones. As a child, he would creep through the train yard and squat on the edge of it, looking at the rich houses and marveling at their lifestyle. He often wondered what it was that made those houses so nice and those people so rich, while people in his neighborhood remained poor and unsuccessful.
Eventually, this gutsy kid started going door to door, asking the wealthy questions, and sometimes even if he could see the inside of their houses. Many of them humored him, being just a kid and all.

BOOKS!
The rich had libraries full of books, most of which they had read, while those in his neighborhood only read, as a general rule, when they absolutely had to.
So, there you have it. Reading books = success in life. It can't get much simpler than that.
Thoughts? Feelings? Insights? Anybody know the reference for this story?

I'll admit that when I first read this, I was not very happy that he left his ax behind. His ax has defined him since book 1, and him being without it feels like his character is suddenly incomplete. That said, I do understand his rationale for throwing it away, based on what Elyas told him long ago. It was interesting, though, that Elyas didn't agree with his assessment. He kind of wanted Perrin to keep the ax.
Also, I will say that what happens with Perrin here on out, as concerns his weapons, is pretty cool. So don't cry too many tears over the loss of his ax, even if, like me, you really want to.
I thought how he broke the Aiel was smart. This particular group is too smart and too tough to trifle with. If he had to break them, this was probably the only effective way. Perrin's doing what he feels he has to. Brutal or not, I personally can't and don't fault him for it.
2. Tallanvor suggests to team up with Seanchan to defeat the Shaido. Should Perrin agree? Will he just end up having to rescue people from the Seanchan instead?

1. I am sure that we are all so sorry for Alviarin, now that she is about to be outed as Black Ajah by Elaida and has seen Mesaana reduced to a terrified wreak by Shaidar Haran . . . or perhaps not! Do you think that Elaida actually has any evidence to use against Alviarin, or is it all bluff and self-delusion from the Amyrlin we love to hate? Has Alviarin got any hope of uncovering the Black Hunters, even with her newly minted ‘Mark’?
This is one of those things that I feel both ways about. It was nice to see Alviarin get a taste of her own medicine; be on the receiving end of the cat and mouse game. And yet, it sort of irritated me to see Elaida so smug. Elaida certainly thinks she has something over Alviarin. I don't thing she's cool enough or smart enough for a bluff of this magnitude if she doesn't. If she'd had the backbone to this earlier, she could have been rid of Alviarin long ago. It was convincing enough to make Alviarin run to Mesaana.
While it's kind of interesting that Alviarin now works for Shaidar Haran--and it's always nice to see that the Forsaken are oh-so-very-human--at the same time, it kind of falls under the heading of, "I don't care."

Follow Friday: Favorite Picture Books
Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers -- but you have to know -- the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.
The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!
How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools -- keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them "hi" in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

Movie Review: Winter's Tale

I read somewhere that Scorsese was once attached to the project, but backed out because the story was "unfilmable." After seeing it, I think I know what he was referring to, but obviously "unfilmable" it wasn't.
Plot: Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) is a thief with no parentage to speak of. When he tries to rob a rich mansion, which he believes to be empty, he finds the family's daughter, Beverly, at home. They strike up a conversation, and their love story begins. Beverly Penn is dying from a strange form of consumption that leaves her body constantly giving off more heat than is healthy. She sleeps in a tent on the roof of her home, even in winter, to keep her body heat down. Too much strenuous activity--such as dancing--could easily kill her.
Meanwhile, a demon named Pearly Soames (played by Russel Crowe) is chasing Peter around town. The premise is that every human being is allowed one miracle. Soames' entire mission is to stop these miracles from occurring. He seems to have a personal vendetta toward Peter and wants to keep him from getting his miracle, which he assumes is to save Beverly.
As per usual, things don't work out for anyone as planned, and Peter finds himself in present day, though he has no idea why. It seems perhaps the miracle he is destined for is not the one he always assumed it would be.
